Uruguay is a country in South America with 3½ million inhabitants. Neighboring countries are Argentina and Brazil. The republic has a coastline along the Atlantic Ocean. The landscape is varied and consists of fertile lowlands, grasslands and hilly areas. The Paraná plateau is in the west. Two mountain ridges run from north to south west. Along the coast there are wide sandy plains, lagoons and dunes. There is a temperate climate. Capital Montevideo has 1.3 million inhabitants. Sights include the harbor market, Plaza de la Independencia, the Cabildo, the Salvo Palace and the Palace of Justice, the Gaucho monument, the town hall and the Diáz Palace. Other important cities include Salto, Ciudad de la Costa, Paysandú, Las Piedras, Rivera, Maldonado, Tacuarembó and Melo. The historic district of the city of Colonia del Sacramento is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Other places of interest include the seaside resort of Punta del Este, the island of Gorriti, Colonia Suiza, the city of Cabo Polonia, the national parks and the flora and fauna.
