Suriname is a country in South America with 480,000 inhabitants. Neighboring countries are Guyana, Brazil and French Guiana. The republic has a coastline along the Atlantic Ocean. The Berg land of Suriname extends over the southern half of Suriname. North of the Bergland there is low and undulating savannah-like terrain. The northern area consists of lagoons, swamps, mangrove forests and parwa forests. Most of Suriname is covered with jungle from the Amazon rainforest. There is a tropical rainforest climate. Capital Paramaribo has 245,000 inhabitants. Sights are the Saint Peter and Paul Cathedral, Fort Zeelandia, Palm Gardens and the Surinamese Museum. The historic city center is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Just like the nature park of Central Suriname. Other important places are Albina, Brokopondo, Groningen, Lelydorp, Nieuw Amsterdam, Nieuw Nickerie, Onverwacht and Totness. Other attractions include the Brownsberg nature park, Cola Creek, the butterfly farm, the Galibi nature reserve, jungle lodge Awarradam, Pineapple mountain in Kumalu and the Mariënburg plantation site.
