Peru is a country in South America with 30 million inhabitants. Neighboring countries are Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil, Bolivia and Chile. The republic has a long coastline with the Pacific Ocean. The landscape of Peru consists of three parts. The eastern rainforests, cloud forests and lowlands in the Amazon region. The mountain country is located in Central Peru. The highland (Altiplano) of Peru is the second highest plain in the world. The coastline consists of plains, sand dunes, hilly land, sand deserts and stone. Peru also has many rivers, including the Amazon, volcanoes and Lake Titicaca. There is a tropical rainforest climate with drought on the coast and cold temperatures in the highlands. Capital city of Lima has 8 million inhabitants. Places of interest are ruins of Pachacamac, Miraflores and San Isidro, the Plaza de Armaz and the Plaza San Martín. The historic center is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Just like the historic center of the city of Arequipa, the city of Cusco, the historic shrine of Machu Picchu, the archaeological sites of Chavin and Chan Chan, the national parks Huascaran, Manú and Rio Abiseo and the geoglyphs of Nazca and pampas de Jumana. Other important cities are Arequipa, Cajamarca, Caral, Cuzco, Ica, Iquitos, Pisco, Trujillo, Huanuco, Tacna, Huaraz and Juliaca. Other places of interest are the Inca valley, the chullpass of Sillustani, the weaver island of Taquile and the national parks.
