Mexico is a country in the southernmost part of North America and consists of 110 million inhabitants. Neighboring countries are the United States, Belize and Guatemala. Mexico has a coastline along the Pacific Ocean, the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico. The republic has two peninsulas, Baja california and Yucatán and a number of islands. The landscape is largely mountainous. Hills, mountain ranges, valleys, canyons, volcanoes and crater lakes. But there are also desert areas, savannah area, swamps and coastal plains with beaches. Vegetation in the form of coniferous forests and tropical rainforest. There is a tropical rainforest climate, only in the north there is a desert climate. Capital Mexico City has 9 million inhabitants. Sights include the Zócalo square and the Aztec templo mayor, the National Palace and the Spanish cathedral, the Independence Monument, the Torre Mayor skyscraper, Chapultepec park and the national anthropology museum, the Square of Three Cultures, the Basilica of Guadalupe and the Aztec stadium. UNESCO's World Heritage List includes many pre-Columbian cities, historic centers, reserves, protected areas, archaeological sites, monasteries, mission posts, and ancient Mayan cities.
