Honduras is a country in Central America with 7.8 million inhabitants. Neighboring countries are Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua. The country has a long coastline along the Caribbean Sea in the north and a short coastline along the Gulf of Fonseca in the south. The landscape consists mainly of hills, mountains and mountain ranges. Furthermore, many rivers and lakes. There is vegetation in the form of tropical rain forest, pine forests and cloud forests. The low coastal plains consist of bays, lagoons, mangrove forests and beaches. In the Caribbean Sea are the Bahia Islands, the Swan Islands and a barrier reef. Two climate types can be distinguished. There is a temperate climate in the mountains. There is a tropical climate in the plains. Capital Tegucigalpa has 1½ million inhabitants. Sights include the Basilica of Suyapa, the San Miguel cathedral, the university building, the Cristo de el Picacho monument, the Iglesia de San Francisco church and the national museum. Other important cities are Choluteca, Comayagua, El Progreso, La Ceiba, La Esperanza, Omoa, Tela, Trujillo, San Pedro Sula, Santa Rosa de Copán and Siguatepeque. The UNESCO World Heritage Site includes the archaeological site of the Mayan city of Copán and the Biosphere Reserve Río Plátano. Other places of interest are the ancient Mayan culture, the many national parks, Spanish forts and the Miskito, Paya and Sumo Indians.
