Haiti is a country in Central America with 9 million inhabitants. The country is located on the western half of the island of Hispaniola. Neighboring country on this island is the Dominican Republic. The republic lies between the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. The Windward Passage separates Haiti from Cuba. The landscape consists of mountains, hills, fertile valleys, rugged rocky coasts, beaches, bays, rivers and lakes, such as saltwater Lake Azuei. Haiti is also surrounded by a number of islands. The largest four are Île de la Gonâve, Île Tortuga, Île à Vache and Les Cayemites. Capital Port au Prince has 1.4 million inhabitants. Sights include the iron market, the national palace, the statue of the unknown slave, the national museum, the cathedrals, the art museums and the Basilica of Notre Dame. Other important cities include Cap-Haitien, Carrefour, Delmas, Gonaives, Jacmel, Jérémie, Les Cayes, Limbé, Pétionville, Port-de-Paix, Saint-Marc and Verrettes. The Citadel National Historical Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. These include the ruins of the Sans-Souci palace and the buildings of Ramiers. Other sights include the Citadelle Laferriére castle, the mountain village of Kenscoff and the Gingerbread houses.
