Guatemala is a country in Central America with 13 million inhabitants. Neighboring countries are Mexico, Belize, Honduras and El Salvador. Guatemala has a short coastline along the Gulf of Honduras in the east and a longer coastline along the Pacific Ocean in the southwest. The landscape consists of four parts. Guatemala is mountainous. Central are the foothills of the Andes. Southern volcanic mountains. The sides of the highlands are fertile and are used for agriculture. In the northern Petén region lies a limestone plateau with grasslands and tropical rainforest. In the fertile coastal plains, plantations, breeding, rivers and lakes. The largest lake is the Izabal. There is a tropical climate with a wet and a dry season. Capital Guatemala city has 1.7 million inhabitants. Sights are the National Palace, the Zoo of La Aurora, the Museum of Modern Art, the Church of La Merced and the many Mayan museums. Other important cities are Livingston, Panajachel, San Andrés Sajcabajá, Santa Cruz del Quiché, Santo Tomás de Castilla, Sololá and Totonicapán. The UNESCO World Heritage Site includes the Tikal National Park, the city of Antigua Guatemala and the archaeological park and ruins of Quiriguá. Other places of interest are the Mayan cities, Mayan culture, Laguna Lachuá, underground caves at Lanquín and the flora and fauna.
