Colombia is a country in the north of South America with 45 million inhabitants. Neighboring countries are Panama, Venezuela, Brazil, Peru and Ecuador. The republic has a coastline with two seas. In the north along the Caribbean Sea and in the west with the Pacific Ocean. The landscape is largely determined by the three large Andes mountain ranges and high plains. The Amazon area with the tropical rainforest is located to the south. To the east lies the Orinoco area. Mangrove forests also occur in coastal areas. There is mainly a tropical rain climate. In the east more a savannah climate. It is cooler in the mountains. The capital Bogotá has 7 million inhabitants. Bogotá is a modern city with high-rise buildings. But also with colonial churches and republican houses. Sights are the Plaza Bolivar, the Palacio San Carlos, the National Museum and the Gold Museum. Other important cities are Medellín, Santiago de Cali, Barranquilla, Cartagena, Cúcuta, Bucaramanga, Pereira, Santa Marta and Ibagué. The UNESCO World Heritage list includes the port, the forts and a group of monuments in Cartagena, the Los Katios National Park, the historic center of Santa Cruz de Mompox, the Malpelo reserve and the Tierradentro and San Agustín archaeological parks. Other sights include the Valley of the Statues, the Salt Cathedral, the Philippe Castle and the white city of Popoayan.
