Belize is a country in Central America with 300,000 inhabitants. It is located on the Yucatán peninsula. Neighboring countries are Mexico and Guatemala. The parliamentary monarchy has a coastline along the Caribbean Sea. The country bore the name British Honduras until 1973. Belize has had self-government since 1964. The country is a member of the British Commonwealth. Southern and central is Maya Mountains. Inland hills and tropical forests. Caves can be found throughout the country, with underwater caves just off the coast. Marsh plains and mangrove forests on the coast. The islands of Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye and the Turneffe islands lie in the Caribbean Sea. Furthermore about 200 cays and coral reefs. The Barrier Reef of Belize is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Rio Hondo, Belize and Sarstoon rivers are surrounded by swamps and freshwater lagoons. There is a subtropical climate with a hurricane season. The capital Belmopan has 20,000 inhabitants. Other important cities are Corozal, Orange Walk, Belize City, San Pedro, San Ignacio, Dangriga and Punta Gorda. Places of interest are the ruins of Mayan cities of Caracol, Lamanai, Xunantunich and Lubaantun, the Community Baboon game reserve, the coral reefs, the Blue Hole, marine life, the flora and fauna in the jungle and the Garifuna music.
