Travel information Uruguay traditions & culture: Uruguay is a country in South America with 3 ½ million inhabitants. Neighboring countries are Argentina and Brazil. The republic has a coastline along the Atlantic Ocean. The landscape is varied and consists of fertile lowlands, grasslands and hilly areas. The Paraná Plateau is located in the west. There are two mountain ridges from north to south west. Along the coast are wide sand plains, lagoons and sand dunes. There is a temperate climate. Montevideo Capital has 1.3 million inhabitants. Sights include the port market, Plaza de la Independencia, the Cabildo, the Salvo Palace and the Palace of Justice, the monument of the Gaucho, the town hall and Diaz Palace. Other major cities include Salto, Ciudad de la Costa, Paysandu, Las Piedras, Rivera, Maldonado, Tacuarembó and Melo. The historic district of the city of Colonia del Sacramento is on the World Heritage list of UNESCO. Other attractions include seaside resort Punta del Este, the island Gorriti, Colonia Suiza, the city Cabo Polonia, national parks and flora and fauna.
