Travel information Guatemala : Guatemala is a country in Central America with 13 million inhabitants. Neighboring countries are Mexico, Belize, Honduras and El Salvador. Guatemala has a short coastline on the Gulf of Honduras in the east and a long coastline along the Great Ocean to the southwest. The landscape consists of four parts. Guatemala is mountainous. Central, the foothills of the Andes. Southern volcanic mountains. The sides of the highlands are fertile and used for agriculture. In the northern Peten region is a limestone plateau with grasslands and tropical rainforests. In the fertile coastal plains plantations, animal husbandry, rivers and lakes. The largest lake is the Izabal. There is a tropical climate with a wet and a dry season. Capital Guatemala City has 1.7 million inhabitants. Attractions are the National Palace, the zoo of La Aurora, the museum of modern art, the church of La Merced and the many Mayan museums. Other major cities Livingston, Panajachel, San Andres Sajcabajá, Santa Cruz del Quiche, Santo Tomás de Castilla, Solola and Totonicapán. On the list of UNESCO world heritage is the Tikal National Park, the city of Antigua Guatemala and the archaeological park and the ruins of Quiriguá. Other attractions are the Maya cities, Mayan culture, Laguna Lachuá, underground caves in Lanquín, flora and fauna.
