The Bahamas is an island group in North America, with 300,000 inhabitants. The archipelago consists of 700 islands, of which about 30 are inhabited. The Bahamas are part of the British Commonwealth. The monarchy is located in the Atlantic Ocean north of Cuba and east of Florida. The largest islands are Andros, Great Inagua, Grand Bahama, Great Abaco, Eleuthera, Cat, San Salvador, Acklins, Crooked and Maya Guana. There are in this area around 2400 cay's (mini-islands). Most islands are surrounded by sandy beaches. Then there are many beautiful coral reefs and sand banks, located in shallow and very clear water. The islands themselves are flat with a rocky bottom. There is a tropical maritime climate. The capital, Nassau has 210,000 inhabitants and is located on the island of New Providence. Nassau is known for its colorful houses with colonial architecture, the port area, night life and Junkanoo. Other cities are Coopers Town, Marsh Harbor, Freeport and Matthew Town. Places are the Parliament Square, the Popeye Museum, the Victoria Gardens, the Pirate Museum, the Ernest Hemingway Museum, Dixon lighthouse, the many churches, the Pineapple Festival, the Blue Lagoon, the rich marine life, the palm beaches and nature.
