Chile is a country in South America with 19 million inhabitants. Neighboring countries are Argentina, Peru and Bolivia. The republic has a long coastline along the Pacific Ocean. The western part of Tierra del Fuego is part of Chile. Four groups of islands belonging to the territory of Chile, the Juan Fernández archipelago, the Desventuradas Islands, Easter Island and the Diego Ramírez islands. The landscape is very diverse. Eastern is the Andes mountains with volcanic rocks, lakes, fjords and ice sheets. Along the coast is the coastal mountains: Cordillera de la Costa. Between Here is a plain which consists of desert (Atacama), salt plains, fertile valleys, forests, lakes, rivers and Patagonian steppes (pampas's). There are 9 climatic zones. Capital Santiago has 220,000 inhabitants. Other major cities are Antofagasta, Arica, Chuquicamata, Coquimbo, La Serena, Osorno, oasis town of San Pedro de Atacama, Temuco, Valparaíso port, Puente Alto and Punta Arenas. On the list of UNESCO world heritage is the Rapa Nui National Park on Easter Island, the churches of Chiloe, the historic district of Valparaíso, the mining town of Sewell and the grooves of nitric Humber Stone and Santa Laura. Places are the many parks and reserves, the Mapuche culture, the geysers of El Tatio, Robinson Crusoe Island, Easter Island and the Cathedral of San Marcos.
